If you are visiting this site, you have probably received mobilization orders recently and are exploring exemption options. It's a frightening process—trying to figure out on what basis to file, which officials to call, which forms to fill out, and not to mention the ramifications of your decisions…it's enough to leave you feeling completely hopeless. Not too long ago, I found myself standing in your shoes. Luckily for me, I came across Bill Meili's site, and I can honestly tell you that reaching out to him was the best move I could have made.

A little over a month ago I received mobilization orders after being out of active duty for three and a half years and with six months left on my IRR obligation. There were several reasons I felt an exemption was necessary. After my deployment I developed asthma, which the VA attributed to the surroundings I was subject to in Afghanistan. As a disabled vet receiving 30% disability, I felt returning to duty was an unreasonable risk to my health. During my IRR I started my own business as a trader. Without a staff to take over if I were to leave, deployment would surely mean the demise of my company.

Before calling Bill, I gathered the documents I assumed would be sufficient — my prescriptions and medical information, some tax documents about my company, and a few papers the VA had given me. After speaking with Bill I realized I had much to learn about how to put together an exemption brief! Over the course of three weeks, Bill and I explored many more options, including the specific drugs in my asthma medications and their effects, and guidelines set forth by the army on the admissibility of soldiers on certain medications. After speaking at length with me and my family about my civilian life, he directed me to a psychiatrist who diagnosed me with PTSD, a diagnosis I never even considered. When Bill was finished putting together my case, he forwarded on a copy of the papers for me to have on record. I was blown away by Bill's work! Over 50 pages of a precise argument, organized and worded in a way I never could have put together myself. The attention to detail was amazing—every possible supporting document was there, including many I had overlooked or dismissed. The appeal was eloquent, direct, and extremely well-executed. As an insider with many years of experience, he knows what wins appeals.

A week ago I received a call from the Army stating my exemption had been granted. I can now carry on with my business plans and concentrate on the future with my family — something I will never again take for granted.
